By the Ministry of Environment Decree published in the U.G 24 \ 02 \ 98 in compliance with Law 979/98 and 694/91 the protected natural area - that includes a large coastal strip of the Salento shoreline from Punta Prosciutto to Torre Inserraglio - has been established. The shoreline mapping includes three Areas: A ( total reserve ), B (partial reserve), C (general reserve). In such zones (see the map) with exception of the A zone - scuba diving is allowed. The sea depth does not exceed 30 meters and the benthic biocenosis (gathering of different species) is particularly multicoloured:
coralloid, precoralloid, Mediterranean tape weed, underwater reefs (full of caves) and fauna hard to find in the Mediterranean Sea.
Thanks to the support of the Biology Department at the University of Lecce, a detailed mapping of the sea park bottom has been made possible. The outcomes are not only useful at a scientific level : thanks to a simple GPS device, scuba divers can spot out and reach the most beautiful and incredible sites of this marine area. The peculiar coastal morphology allows an easy mooring or approaching to reefs where underwater caves will present us with unique colourful flamboyant underwater sceneries.
